Permanent Exhibition on Traditional Potatoes of the Genoese Mountains

The Journey of the Potato in the Genoese Mountains

Once upon a time, a small tuber traveled from distant lands and found a home among the mountains of the Ligurian Apennines. This exhibition tells the story of that crucial encounter, revealing how the potato became, from the late eighteenth century onwards, the main resource for the survival of local communities. It is not just a food item: it is the protagonist of a story of ingenuity, resilience, and tradition.

Biodiversity on the Table: Historic Varieties

At the heart of the exhibition is the Quarantina Bianca Genovese, alongside other historic varieties such as Prugnona, Morella, and Cannellina Nera. Each potato tells a different story through its shapes, colors, and culinary qualities. This agricultural biodiversity is not merely botanical; it is a cultural heritage that demonstrates how farmers selected varieties able to withstand harsh climates and challenging terrains.

The Hard Work of Mountain Farming

The exhibition does more than illustrate cultivation: through a rich iconographic section and the display of historical farming tools — hoes designed for steep slopes, baskets for transport — visitors can sense the labor of heroic agriculture practiced on small terraces. Every farmer’s gesture, every tool, tells the story of the arduous work required to transform the mountains into a place of survival and prosperity.

Potatoes as Culture and Community

Potato cultivation profoundly impacted social and cultural life in the region: from fairs to economic exchanges, and even daily diets. In this space, the potato is not merely food, but a genuine cultural artifact, symbolizing farmers’ ingenuity and the food security they ensured for generations. The exhibition thus becomes a bridge connecting history, agriculture, and collective memory.
