Description

The Slate Cycle Route is an extraordinary experience that allows you to completely immerse yourself in the lush nature of Val Fontanabuona, combining breathtaking landscapes with a discovery of local history and culture. Here is a detailed guide through this fascinating cycle route of approximately 30 kilometres.

Departure from Lavagna

The route begins on the panoramic seaside promenade of Lavagna. From here, cyclists gradually immerse themselves in tranquil natural beauty, with sea views accompanying the first few kilometres.

Visit to the Basilica dei Fieschi

Near Cogorno, a visit to the Basilica dei Fieschi is recommended. This splendid medieval cathedral offers an immersion in local history, enriching the trip with a cultural discovery.

Entella Natural Oasis

Crossing the Entella natural oasis, you cycle along the banks of the river, surrounded by reeds, bamboo and willows. This stretch is ideal for spotting several species of migratory birds that populate the area.

Climb towards Cicagna

Once you arrive in Cicagna, the most challenging part of the route begins. You go up the Val Fontanabuona through mixed woods and chestnut groves, with stretches of cultivated areas that offer a variety of natural panoramas.

The Tibetan Bridge

Along the route to Gattorna, cyclists have the opportunity to cross an exciting Tibetan bridge. This adds a touch of adventure to the experience, making the trip even more unforgettable.

Path adaptability

The Slate Cycle Route is suitable for different types of bicycles. The first kilometers are suitable for recreational bicycles, while for the central and final part of the route – characterized by more challenging terrain – mountain bikes are more suitable.

Beware of Interruptions

It is important to take into account the interruptions caused by floods along some sections of the route. In these cases, it is advisable to follow the Strada Statale 225 of Val Fontanabuona to ensure a safe and continuous journey.

Practical Advice

Equipment: Make sure you have the right equipment, especially if you decide to tackle the Tibetan bridge and the more challenging sections towards Gattorna.
Time: Plan the route considering the time needed for breaks, such as the visit to the Basilica dei Fieschi.
Safety: Respect the road signs and pay attention to route conditions, especially in areas subject to interruptions.

The Slate Cycle Route represents a unique opportunity to explore the uncontaminated nature and rich history of Val Fontanabuona, making every ride an adventure not to be missed for nature and cycling lovers.
