Northeast of the town of Gambatesa, nestled among hills and trails, lies a mining site that is part of the Gambatesa Nuova concession. Accessible via a dirt road starting near the village, visitors are welcomed by a small shrine dedicated to miners, bearing the inscription “The mountain is God’s book, miners know how to read it”, a reminder of the harmony between humans and nature and a tribute to those who worked deep within the earth.
The complex preserves numerous entrances to underground tunnels, silent witnesses to intense and often dangerous labor. Among the mining facilities, one can find compressors, air tanks, and important sections of railway lines, tools that reveal the organization and technology required to extract and transport materials from the depths of the mountain.
This mining site is more than just a workplace: it is a heritage to preserve. Every tunnel, machine, and piece of railway iron is a page of history, telling the story of miners’ lives and the industrial ingenuity that transformed the mountain into a resource. Gambatesa Nuova remains a place where memory and technology meet, offering a bridge between past and present.
