Amphitheater of Mount Ramaceto

Monte Ramaceto: The Sandstone Queen of the Ligurian Apennines

Monte Ramaceto, at 1,344 meters, dominates the main watershed of the Ligurian Apennines, representing the highest point between the Colle di Cadibona and the Passo della Forcella. This sandstone mountain is one of the most famous and visited in the area, thanks to its imposing presence, spectacular views, and a network of trails that make it accessible in every season.

Trails, Loops, and Nature

Hikers can explore several routes: the loop from Passo di Romaggi, from Costa di Soglio or Pian dei Ratti, from Mezzanego, and from Villagrande di Cichero. The summit ridge, over one and a half kilometers long, and the huge erosive amphitheater on the southeast side give Monte Ramaceto a unique and striking profile.

Asymmetry and Landscapes

The mountain displays the typical features of sandstone in the Ligurian and Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with distinctly different slopes. The northwest side, facing the Val d’Aveto, follows the tilt of the rock layers and appears gentle and uniform. The cold, humid climate has fostered the growth of one of the most beautiful beech forests in the area. In contrast, the southeast side cuts perpendicularly through the layers, appearing extremely steep and rocky, with cliffs hundreds of meters high.

History and Culture Amid the Rocks

Beyond nature, Monte Ramaceto preserves important historical traces. The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri passes along its ridge, and two Roman boundary stones were discovered here, now preserved and displayed at the MuSel – Archaeological and City Museum. These artifacts testify to the mountain’s strategic importance since ancient times, combining nature, history, and culture in a journey waiting to be explored.
