Basalt Cliff of Rocca del Prete

Rocca del Prete, a Basalt Sentinel on Monte Maggiorasca

On the slopes of Monte Maggiorasca, Rocca del Prete stretches out like a rocky bastion nearly six hundred meters long. It is not particularly high, yet it stands out for its rugged, compact character, poised between sky and ridge. Here, the Apennine wind accompanies hikers and climbers alike, while the metallic sound of carabiners breaks the mountain silence.

Climbing Routes Between History and Renewal

Along this natural wall run rock climbing routes and mixed itineraries that have attracted generations of alpinists. The north ridge, first climbed in 1960, marks an important chapter in its vertical history; recently, the route has been re-equipped, restoring safety and new life to this classic line. Most of the other routes, opened relatively recently—mainly by climbers from Piacenza—are now protected with bolts, making Rocca del Prete a well-regarded and accessible natural climbing area.

The Lava Pillows of Acquapendente

Yet Rocca del Prete is more than a sporting challenge. The wall is made of basaltic rock that tells a story far older than modern ascents. In the Acquapendente sector, large and perfectly preserved pillow basalts emerge—rounded structures formed by the rapid cooling of lava in an underwater environment. Between one hold and the next, climbers can quite literally touch the memory of ancient ocean floors later uplifted into mountains.

Where Climbing Meets Geology

At Rocca del Prete, sport and science converge. Every route is not only a line to follow upward, but also a journey through the geological history of the Apennines. Among bolts, ridges, and basalt formations, Monte Maggiorasca becomes an open-air laboratory where the passion for climbing intertwines with awe for the deep forces of the Earth.”
