Megalithic Face

The Face of Christ: Mystery Between Rock and Legend

A short distance from the Abbazia di Borzone, along the road to Zolezzi, a remarkable rock stands high on a ridge. Its shape surprisingly resembles a human face, and many consider it a genuine Paleolithic rock sculpture, known as the Face of Christ.

Size and Features

The face carved into the rock measures approximately 7 meters in height and 4 meters in width, dominating the surrounding landscape with an almost monumental presence. Every line and shadow gives the impression of depth and expression, as if the stone itself were watching over the valley below.

Origins and Interpretations

The origin of the Face of Christ remains uncertain. Some scholars suggest it is a natural phenomenon, while others propose it is the work of ancient rock art. Popular tradition, however, attributes its creation to the monks of the Abbazia di Borzone. Whatever its origin, the formation—natural or man-made—continues to evoke a sense of guardianship over the secondary Penna valley and the ancient routes connecting the Tigullio coast to the Po Valley.
