In the Ligurian-Emilian Apennines, at 1,330 meters above sea level, the western slope of Monte Aiona opens onto a landscape suspended in time. Here, among high-altitude meadows and silent beech forests, small glacial lakes sparkle like mirrors. Born from the sculpting power of glaciers, they are witnesses to an era when ice carved the mountains, leaving behind these precious pockets of water.
Today, these environments are protected within the Riserva Naturale Orientata delle Agoraie e del Moggetto, a safeguarded area preserving delicate and ecologically valuable ecosystems. The Agoraie include four perennial lakes of rare beauty, accompanied by seasonal ponds that change with the rhythm of the seasons. Nearby lies the Moggetto, also known as Stagno Lastro, a lake particularly interesting for its fish fauna, which finds here an ideal and peaceful habitat.
Among all the lakes, the group of Upper Agoraie lakes is undoubtedly the most captivating. Within this quiet and intimate setting stands out the Lake of Firs, named for a surprising detail: on its bottom lie numerous fossilized trunks of Silver Fir. Submerged and preserved by the cold water, these remnants of ancient forests tell a story of climate change and landscape transformation. Gazing into its clear waters feels like looking into a natural archive where time has paused.
Walking among these lakes means entering a high-altitude sanctuary where silence is part of the experience. The Agoraie and Moggetto are not only hiking destinations but also fragile, balanced ecosystems where water, peatlands, forests, and wildlife coexist in ancient harmony. This corner of the Apennines invites respect and contemplation, a reminder that even the gentlest mountains hold deep memories shaped by ice.
