Lake Bargone, also known as Roccagrande lake, is a precious wetland located in the upper valley of the Petronio stream, behind Sestri Levante. This body of water represents one of the few natural wetlands on the maritime side of the Ligurian Apennines, offering a unique and varied habitat for many plant and animal species.
Located in an open basin with small depressions, Lake Bargone is located at the head of the valley of the Bargonasco stream, one of the main tributaries of the Petronio. The perpetually flooded area, although partly invaded by marsh vegetation, occupies approximately half of the surrounding meadow basin. The basin is framed by the reliefs of Monte Bocco (1024 m), the sharp Monte Roccagrande (970 m) and the rocky Monte Treggin (871 m). The surrounding vegetation is mainly shrubby, dominated by boxwood, with large spaces of prairie, boulders and rocky cliffs of jasper and ophiolite. The formation of the basin is probably linked to glacial phenomena.
Despite its superficiality and proximity to the ridge, Lake Bargone never dries up thanks to the presence of perennial springs. The lake’s outlet flows southwards, feeding one of the sources of the Bargonasco stream.
The area has been transformed into a sanctuary for the large number of protected species that find their habitat there. The marsh flora includes rushes, cyperaceae and grasses, while the fauna includes several species of amphibians such as the Apennine frog, the agile frog, the great green frog, the yellow-bellied toad, the common tree frog, the great crested newt and the Alpine newt . There are also dragonflies, water beetles and the collared grass snake. Furthermore, the area is home to around 70 species of sedentary and migratory birds, making Lake Bargone a place of great interest for birdwatching enthusiasts.
Visiting Lake Bargone means immersing yourself in a rich and diversified ecosystem, where every corner reveals a new natural surprise.
