Along the loop trail of Monte Zatta, starting from Reppia or Monte Chiappozzo, hikers can discover a small gem of mountain tradition: a snow pit still remarkably well preserved, hidden in the heart of a dense beech forest.
Unlike typical round snow pits, this structure has a unique shape, with walls lined in exposed stone. This cladding provided optimal insulation, keeping the snow fresh for longer and allowing ice production even during the warmer months.
Snow pits were widespread across Monte Zatta and supplied the valley settlements with ice and preserved snow. Walking along the trails connecting Reppia and Monte Chiappozzo, the snow pit stands as a silent witness to the daily life of mountain communities, recalling a time when the mountains provided essential resources for the villages below.
