In the Heart of the Rock: The Longest Cave in the Val Graveglia
In the quiet inland area of the Tigullio, among rugged landscapes and unspoiled nature, lies the longest cave in the Val Graveglia, one of the most important in the entire hinterland. A Journey Through Time Between the Jurassic and Cretaceous
The cave develops at the base of the “Calpionella Limestone” formation, sedimentary rocks that were deposited between the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, about 135 million years ago. Walking inside it means crossing a threshold in time, coming into contact with rock layers that tell the story of the ancient sea that once covered these lands.
Karst Phenomena in Their Purest Form
These limestones, usually characterized by a high silica content, are here almost pure. This unique feature has allowed the development of a true karst phenomenon: over thousands of years, water has carved and shaped the limestone, creating striking underground environments. The cave thus represents a valuable example of the balance between geological composition and natural transformation.
