Conferred to the stone by the graphite pigment, the elegant leaden gray color of the slate is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Ligurian Tigullio. Skilfully superimposed, the “tigule” of the roofs are the iconic element that characterizes the anthropized landscape. But slate is not limited to protecting the tops of homes from the elements: versatile, this stone finds space in a myriad of applications.
Observing the winter panoramas, you will be able to notice the particular features of the chimney pots. Arranged vertically, the top slate slabs prevent the north wind from suffocating the braziers on cold winter nights. The oldest homes retain inside them floors smoothed by time, fixed furnishings that tell stories of generations, jambs and soffits of doors and portals that welcome those who cross the threshold. With their slate treads, the stairs both inside and outside the homes lead to intimate spaces or breathtaking views, while the skirtings decorate and protect the walls of the houses with elegance and resistance. No less important are the less flashy but essential elements, such as the window sills that frame breathtaking views, the balconies that offer relief to the facades, and the shelves that hold objects and memories.
Slate also has its enemy: over the years, atmospheric agents attack and degrade it. That of the Levante basin, in particular, deteriorates due to excoriation, following the parallel planes characteristic of schist stone. A hazelnut-grey patina appears approximately three or four years after installation. Only then does the stone begin to exfoliate through a slow process that can last many years.
With its timeless charm and its discreet strength, slate continues to be the heart of Liguria, an intertwining of stories of stone and life, resistance and beauty, in a balance between man and nature that is generated and consumed.
