Società Economica di Chiavari: An Enlightened Idea Becomes Heritage
In 1791, in the heart of Chiavari, the Società Economica was founded with an ambitious and forward-thinking goal: to promote knowledge, support learning, and foster the intellectual growth of the community; just a few years later, in 1796, its Library was established, destined to become one of the region’s most important cultural institutions, nurtured from the beginning by the generosity of members, scholars, and book enthusiasts.
A Library That Grows Through the Passion of Bibliophiles
Over the centuries, shelf by shelf, the collection expanded through donations and bequests, becoming a heritage of over 96,000 volumes, including ancient works, manuscripts, prints, and historically valuable texts that tell the story of Liguria through documents, studies, and testimonies preserving its cultural identity.
Spaces for Culture and Community
Today, the Library of the Società Economica is not only a place of preservation but a living space: two conference rooms host meetings and presentations, while the garden, equipped with chairs and tables, offers an outdoor oasis for reading and dialogue, where knowledge continues to circulate just as the founders envisioned at the end of the 18th century.
