The MuSel – Archaeological and City Museum of Sestri Levante, part of the Museum System of the Sestri Levante and Castiglione Chiavarese network, is located on the 3rd and 4th floors of Palazzo Fascie Rossi on Corso Colombo. The museum offers an exhibition path that spans millennia, telling the story of the territory from Prehistory to the modern era through archaeological finds, historical documents, and a chronological layout that fully engages visitors.
MuSel’s archaeological section allows visitors to explore the earliest traces of human presence in the Tigullio area and surrounding valleys, including Aveto, Graveglia, Sturla, Val Petronio, and upper Val di Vara. Among the most notable pieces are finds from the oldest copper mines in Western Europe and the jasper quarry of Valle Lagorara, as well as evidence of Roman and medieval life, including the San Nicolao di Pietra Colice site on the Bracco Massif, encompassing over 5,000 years of history.
One of the museum’s most extraordinary features is the pair of Roman boundary stones discovered on Monte Ramaceto, behind Chiavari and Lavagna. These unique finds in Italy document the presence of an imperial estate and reveal how the Roman Empire organized the rural landscape of Tigullio, providing an exceptional insight into the ancient relationship between humans and their environment.
On the 3rd floor, the city section dedicates space to the sea and navigation, highlighting maritime history, local craftsmanship, and migration patterns. In this way, MuSel combines archaeology, culture, and traditions, offering an exhibition path that captivates visitors and encourages exploration of historical and cultural itineraries both inside and outside the museum.”
