In Cassego, a hamlet of Varese Ligure, the ancient oratory has hosted an intriguing rural culture museum since 1975. Here, every object and corner tell the story of life in the mountains behind Varese Ligure, showcasing a homogeneous culture expressed through customs, daily life, and traditions of a population closely connected to the land and the seasons.
The museum carefully reconstructs the main production cycles: from milk to wine, from corn to wheat, from hemp to chestnuts, and also includes the artisan’s workshop and the rustic kitchen. Each section helps visitors understand how agricultural and artisanal work was intertwined with daily life, offering an immersive experience of the rural traditions of the area.
The initiative was started by Don Sandro Lagomarsini, parish priest of Cassego, who between 1971 and 1974 collected interviews, films, and oral testimonies from the village elders. At the same time, work tools, household items, and utensils that had fallen into disuse were recovered and studied with the support of the University of Genoa and the University of Salerno, preserving the historical and cultural memory of the community.
Today, the museum serves as a window into the past, where agricultural work, artisanal traditions, and daily life in the Ligurian mountains are preserved and celebrated. Each visit becomes a journey through time, among ancient objects, collected stories, and the rural culture that shaped life in these valleys.
