Nestled in the nature of Val Graveglia, the Chapel of Osti can be reached via a scenic trail from the villages of CassagnaLiguria, Italy””] and Statale. Walking through forests and meadows, the remains of the building gradually emerge from the vegetation, revealing a hidden piece of medieval history tucked within the hills.
Only a few exposed stone walls remain of the ancient chapel, including the apse and an arch that likely formed the entrance. These structures speak of a distant past, of a place of worship and community. Written records attest to the existence of an “Avosti” (Osti) as early as 1241, indicating that the chapel served as a local religious center for centuries.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, an epidemic heavily affected the area, causing depopulation. A new church, Chiesanuova, was built and became the community’s new religious center. The Chapel of Osti, now abandoned, fell into disuse and was never restored after the 17th century, leaving vegetation to gradually reclaim it and preserve its secrets.
Today, the Chapel of Osti is a place of silence and contemplation, where stones recount medieval events and nature has taken over. Walking among its ruins allows visitors to sense the long history of Val Graveglia and the slow intertwining of human events and landscape.
