On the southern slope of the peninsula of Sestri Levante, surrounded by greenery and facing the open sea, stands Villa Mantelli, now known as Villa Domus: a residence that is more than a home—it is a 20th-century architectural manifesto, capable of engaging in dialogue with the landscape and transforming light into a defining structural element, opening southward as if to embrace the breath of the sea.
The villa was designed by Luigi Carlo Daneri, one of the most important Italian Rationalist architects of the first half of the 20th century and a key figure in reshaping the urban image of Genoa, author of works such as the Chiesa di San Marcellino, the Yacht Club in San Michele di Pagana, and the INA housing district of Forte Quezzi; in this villa, Daneri expresses his modern vision through a dynamic composition that moves beyond the traditional cubic scheme of historic villas, breaking the mass into articulated volumes that follow the natural slope of the land and maximize southern exposure.
From the entrance side, the villa appears as a two-story building, yet from the sea it reveals its full presence across four levels, a large white volume animated by balconies that enliven its geometry; bright and rigorously rational, the house embodies the modern language of its time while maintaining a dialogue with history, housing a Byzantine baptismal font and a carved 15th-century Genoese portal, for which Daneri designed a dedicated covered vestibule—almost a protective threshold that frames these fragments of memory within an architecture boldly oriented toward the future.”
