The Grexino district stretches along the hill sloping gently toward the Crovana Stream. In the past, the village was connected to the rest of the town by a simple footbridge, later swept away by a powerful flood. To maintain the connection between the oldest core of Grexino and the main village, an elegant single-arch bridge was built in 1515, a symbol of ingenuity and practicality.
The new bridge was more than just a crossing: it helped manage the traffic of merchants traveling along the famous “linen road” toward the Bocco Pass. Amid the roar of the stream and stones polished by water, the bridge tells a story of trade, travel, and connections between inland Ligurian villages.
Behind the bridge’s construction lies a tragic tale: the flood that destroyed the old footbridge also claimed a twenty-four-year-old man, Calcagnino, who had dared the waters to reach his young bride. His sacrifice remains etched in local memory, intertwined with the artistic heritage of the bridge.
On the right side of the bridge stands a sandstone bas-relief depicting the Birth, Death, and Resurrection of Christ, a tangible sign of fifteenth-century popular devotion. Every carved detail speaks of faith, community, and history, making the bridge not only functional but also a guardian of memory and art.
