The Calpionelle Limestone Outcrop: Geology and Mining History
This outcrop is entirely composed of Calpionelle Limestone from the Cretaceous period, rich in fold structures visible on a large scale (“outcrop-scale”) and featuring traces of ancient extraction areas of the famous “ciappe,” stone slabs historically used for construction and paving. The site represents a perfect combination of geology, landscape, and human activity, offering earth science enthusiasts and hikers a unique opportunity to observe tectonic dynamics and the marks of historic quarrying.
Access via the AV5T Karst Trail
The outcrop can be reached via the AV5T, the karst trail of the Parco dell’Aveto, which crosses environments of high natural value and allows visitors to explore the geological features of the Cretaceous up close. The park has installed two gates at the entrances to regulate access and authorizes visits exclusively for organizations and associations affiliated with bodies recognized by the park, ensuring the area’s protection and a safe, guided experience for visitors.
