Hidden among wooded slopes lies the Casali mining site, where today only modest traces of underground excavation remain—subtle scars etched into the rock. Yet behind these discreet signs lies a much deeper story. In 1861, during an inspection, mining engineer Costantino Perazzi recorded a remark that would reshape the understanding of the site: “from the works carried out by Mr. Vannoni it appears that mining activities were undertaken here in very ancient times…”. An observation that opens fascinating perspectives and suggests a presence long predating the modern era.
Perazzi’s considerations do not rule out exploitation during the Chalcolithic period, potentially making the Casali site contemporary with the nearby Monte Loreto. If so, these galleries would represent not merely historical mining remains, but traces of a primordial relationship between humans and the subsoil—when early communities experimented with rudimentary extraction techniques to obtain valuable resources. Today the site appears quiet and understated, yet it preserves the evocative charm of a place suspended between archaeology and geology, where time seems to be layered within the very rock itself.
