The Bonelli Concession: 19th-Century Workings in a Much Older Landscape

Around 1885, the Bonelli Concession took shape as a mining site developed across several worked levels, reflecting the organized and structured activity typical of the late 19th-century industrial era. The tunnels and extraction fronts reveal a clearly defined project, with no concrete evidence of exploitation prior to the 1800s. Yet the surrounding landscape holds a far older memory: prehistoric occupation of the area is confirmed by the nearby site of Sesco, documented in scholarly studies (Campana–Chella–Negrino–Valli 1987) and protected under an archaeological heritage decree issued in 1993. In this way, the Bonelli Concession stands within a territory where modern industrial mining overlaps with a much more ancient human presence, creating a silent dialogue between industry and prehistory.
