At Passo del Bocco in the municipality of Mezzanego lies the Federico Delpino Forest Garden, an educational space designed to showcase the rich flora of the Ligurian Apennines. Created by the Parco dell’Aveto near the “”Antonio Devoto”” Refuge, the garden offers a synthesis of the main local ecosystems, carefully reconstructed in small thematic flowerbeds that reproduce the diverse forest covers and habitats of the Genoese hinterland.
The garden pays tribute to Federico Delpino (1833-1905), a botanist from Chiavari and one of the founders of modern plant ecology. Delpino was among the first to study plants through their relationships with the environment and pollinating insects. The garden’s educational path reflects this vision, examining the environmental and phytogeographic factors that determine life in the Aveto Park.
The design adopts an informative and accessible approach, avoiding excessive academic jargon, offering a learning walk suitable for all visitors, including those with disabilities. Along the trail, informational stands illustrate the natural environments schematically, highlighting local flora and fauna. Taxonomic labels allow immediate identification of species, making the visit clear, engaging, and interactive.
A rest area and an open-air classroom complete the experience, making the Federico Delpino Forest Garden a key reference point for environmental education in Valle Sturla. Here, nature becomes a teacher, inviting visitors to explore, observe, and understand local ecosystems in a direct and participatory way.
