Beside the cemetery, in a place where time seems to slow down, stands a Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) J. Buchholz that is over 100 years old. Its imposing presence does not inspire fear, but rather invites reflection, like a silent bridge between the earth, memory, and the distant horizon.
According to tradition, this sequoia was brought back home by emigrants returning from North America. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the entire area was marked by a strong wave of migration to the Americas, in search of work and a future. Some families made their way as far as California, where lumber work was in demand in the vast forests of giant sequoias and “sugar” pines of the Sierra Nevada.
That distant journey is now contained within a single tree: a seed that crossed the ocean to become a symbol of sacrifice, hope, and return. Growing beside the cemetery, the sequoia tells a story of departures and homecomings, of lives broken and reunited, becoming a living monument to the collective memory of the community.
