In the green silence of Liguria stands a giant of time: a Castanea sativa Mill. that for nearly 600 years has witnessed the changing of seasons and human history. Reaching a height of 11 meters, this monumental chestnut tree is not merely a plant, but a living presence—guardian of ancient stories and of a deep bond between humanity and nature.
This specimen is believed to be one of the last chestnut trees cultivated by the monks of the Abbey of Borzone during the medieval period. At that time, the chestnut was an essential resource: the sustenance of monastic and rural communities depended largely on its fruits. Each chestnut tells of patient labor, each branch of knowledge passed down through generations.
A Natural Monument to Be Preserved
Listed in 1999 among the monumental trees of Liguria, the chestnut today displays an imposing trunk which, although officially recorded with a diameter of 8 meters, appears divided into two large branches. One of them is supported by props, a sign of structural fragility that has developed over time, possibly due to wood decay. Yet, despite its wounds, the tree continues to live—a resilient witness to a past that endures.
