Along the path leading to the trailhead of the “Muntà dei Povei” in Casarza Ligure, in the San Lazzaro area, a curious tower-like building emerges among the cultivated fields. At first glance simple, the structure tells an ancient story of work and ingenuity tied to the rural life of the area.
This is an old lime kiln, used to bake and grind limestone, transforming it into lime—a material essential for local construction. Its presence shows how the natural resources of the region were skillfully utilized, using production techniques that today appear both fascinating and evocative.
The building, visible only from the outside, dates back at least to the 18th–19th century. Its tower, a symbol of typical production structures of the period, remains an interesting example of rural industrial archaeology, capable of telling the story of work and life in the past, set within the agricultural landscape of Casarza Ligure.”
