Among the majestic squares and ancient alleys of Lavagna, a symbol of connection between two cities with deep roots stands out: Palazzo Franzoni. This ancient building tells the story of an illustrious family from Genoa, the Franzoni, whose name has remained imprinted over the centuries in the architecture and memory of the region.
Way back in 1696, the Franzonis, a noble family from Genoa with possessions also in Cogorno and Lavagna, decided to build an imposing palace in what is now known as Piazza della Libertà, at the time Piazza della Marina. Equipped with a noble chapel, the palace became a tangible symbol of the family’s power and economic prosperity. Over the centuries, the building has experienced many transformations and hosted various functions. From the regular residence of the Franzoni until the nineteenth century, when it was used as accommodation for passing foreign troops and even as a hospital during the epidemics that plagued the region.
In 1907, the building passed into the hands of Lazzaro Repetto, who transformed it into a refined hotel, making significant improvements especially to the exterior. However, the fate of Palazzo Franzoni was destined to change once again. In 1910, Repetto’s heirs decided to offer it for sale to the Municipality of Lavagna, which purchased it in 1931 under the mandate of the mayor Ernesto Liguori. Since then, the building has become the seat of the Municipality, a symbol of local governance and the historical continuity of the city.
Today, Palazzo Franzoni is open to the public through guided tours, offering visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in its rich and fascinating history. Recently, the small chapel on the ground floor finally reopened its doors to the public, giving guests an experience of contemplation and spirituality in a context of great beauty and historicity.
Palazzo Franzoni is not only a historic building, but a symbol of connection between Genoa, Lavagna and Cogorno, representing the deep roots and rich heritage of the region. Each visit to the palace allows you to rediscover a piece of this history, offering a unique look at the noble past and the transformations that have marked the life of the city and its people.
In summary, Palazzo Franzoni is a precious heritage that continues to tell the story of an influential family and the community it helped to build. Its opening to the public and the reopening of the noble chapel allow everyone to appreciate and preserve this historical and cultural heritage.
