The Navone cabbage

Navone Cabbage: A Versatile Ancient Vegetable

The Navone cabbage, also known as “u naùn”, is an ancient vegetable characterized by the tuber, a large species of rounded turnip, which grows underground. Its most valuable part is the tuber, but the plant also has a crown of leaves and a root complex.

The qualities of a very widespread vegetable

This vegetable was widespread in the area, even if it has fallen out of traditional use as a food. Its popularity among growers was due to its ease of cultivation, without special needs in terms of growth and irrigation. An important aspect was its ability to preserve: once it reached maximum growth, the swede was uprooted, decapitated and reburied to be preserved for months. This feature made it valuable for both human and livestock food use, acting as a bridge between the kitchen and the stable.

Tradition

The Navone cabbage, with its prized tuber and its preservation capacity, represented a versatile element in the vegetable garden and in livestock farming, contributing to both the human and animal diet. Its ease of cultivation and longevity made it a precious element in the agricultural and culinary tradition of the region.
