The Versatility of Ligurian Slate: Beyond Roofing
In the heart of the Ligurian Alps, Ligurian slate stands out for its versatility of use, embracing multiple functions beyond simple roofing. This versatility required a touch of mastery on the part of the stonemasons, true stone artists, capable of carving, rectifying and even sculpting this precious material.
The Art of the Stonemasons: Making the Imperfect Perfect
In the past, stonemasons dedicated themselves to “fixing” each individual slab of slate, working skilfully on the inclined edges that emerge after flaking. With patience and dexterity, they used the “frappo” to straighten the edges, ensuring that each piece was ready for its destination.
Customized finishing
Not all plates required such treatment. For some applications, such as troughs and many covers, the shape of the edge mattered little. However, for pieces intended for decorative and functional uses, finishing was critical. The stonemasons carefully dedicated themselves to architectural elements such as jambs, steps and brackets, as well as paving slabs and decorative objects such as bas-reliefs, giving them a touch of timeless elegance and beauty.
Slate as an Artistic and Functional Expression
Thanks to the skill of Ligurian stonemasons, slate not only performed a practical function, but was transformed into authentic works of art. Each piece, worked with care and dedication, brought with it the history and tradition of a land rich in artisan talent.
