History and Transformations

The villa hosted fleeing princes during tumultuous times, such as Prince Francis II of the Two Sicilies and Maria Sofia of Bavaria. However, the fate of the villa took a significant turn in 1979, when the Municipality of Lavagna acquired the area. Deciding to enhance this historical heritage, the municipality transformed Villa Spinola-Grimaldi into a large public park, thus creating an important green oasis in the heart of the city.

Today, Villa Spinola-Grimaldi is much more than a historic residence. Located in the Tigullio Park, it is surrounded by a lush natural environment and important public sports facilities, such as swimming pools, basketball and tennis courts. This green environment is not only a place for recreation, but is also the hub of excellent professional education. It is in fact the seat of the Italian Academy of Mercantile Navy – Tourism of the Sea, together with the Academy of Tourism. These institutions bring prestige to Lavagna thanks to their high level of training in the maritime and tourism sectors, preparing young people of all ages for successful careers in these industries vital to the local economy.
