Promontory and tombolo of Sestri Levante

Sestri Levante: The Charm of the Historic Center Between Land and Sea

The historic center of Sestri Levante unfolds in a unique setting, suspended between the “mainland” and the so-called “Island.” A beauty that deceives the eye: what appears to be separated from the continent is actually connected by a striking natural formation called a tombolo, a sedimentary structure that, to this day, is the only example of its kind in the region.

The Mystery of the Tombolo

This special stretch of land tells the story of nature’s patient work, which over centuries has deposited sand and debris to create a stable bridge between the peninsula and the mainland. Its presence not only shapes the landscape but also preserves the geological history of the area, making Sestri Levante a unique case in Liguria.

Geological Confirmation

Thanks to modern geophysical surveys, researchers have been able to reconstruct the depth and succession of the layers between the beaches adjacent to Piazza Matteotti and the peninsula. These studies confirmed what the eye already suggested: the so-called “Island” has never been a true islet, but an integral part of the territory, shaped over time by sediments and tides.

A Historic Center Suspended Between History and Nature

Today, walking through Sestri Levante means exploring a place where geology and urban history meet. The unique shape of the tombolo offers picturesque views, streets intertwining with the sea, and the feeling of walking along a bridge connecting past and present.
