In the heart of Val Graveglia lies Cassagna, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved villages in the valley. The village retains a compact layout, with arches, narrow internal passages, and charming slate roofs that tell the story of its inhabitants. Walking through its streets, every architectural detail reflects tradition, care, and harmony with the surrounding landscape.
At the entrance of the village, near the Chapel of San Rocco, the structure of the tower can still be recognized. Around 1930, it was lowered and converted into a residence. An even more evocative experience can be had by taking the ancient pedestrian path from Nascio, which crosses a deep gorge over the Rio Novelli via an elegant 18th-century bridge—a testament to ingenuity and architectural beauty.
To admire Cassagna and Nascio from above, follow the mostly unpaved road connecting the two villages, passing through majestic chestnut groves. Near Cassagna was also one of the largest manganese mines in Val Graveglia, a symbol of the extractive activities that shaped the area’s economic history.
On the road from Cassagna to Nascio, at a curve, there is a votive shrine dedicated to Saint Barbara with a 17th-century inscription, evidence of popular devotion and religious memory that has accompanied the village for centuries.
