In the heart of Lavagna, Piazza Guglielmo Marconi shines like a jewel, surrounded by authentic architectural wonders that narrate centuries of history and tradition.
Here, the Brignardello Portico stands out majestically next to the imposing staircase of the Basilica of S. Stefano and the lively facades of the houses, painted in the typical colors of the region. This space is not just a square, but a stage of emotions and suggestions, which welcomes the most important events and the most significant manifestations of the city.
The square itself is the result of a restoration and redevelopment intervention which took place in the seventeenth century, when it was decided to give it a greater scenographic impact. To realize this ambitious project, some town houses were demolished, giving space to new architectural visions. It was in this context that the monumental staircase that today leads to the main entrance of the church was built.
In 1897, Nicola Brignardello, a benefactor of great generosity, contributed to the enrichment of the square with the construction of the side portico, known as the “Brinardello portico”. Legend has it that Brignardello, wishing to avoid passing in front of the Basilica to go to the cemetery, had this portico built. At the end of the long colonnade, a staircase, now closed to the public, led directly to the cemetery entrance. For a long time, the bust of Brignardello, who had made his fortune in America, remained displayed in the portico, a silent witness to his generosity and his bond with the city. Subsequently, the bust was moved to the cemetery chapel, where it continues to watch over those who rest in peace.
Thus, Piazza Guglielmo Marconi is not just a place of meeting and passage, but a symbol of identity and memory, where the stories of the past intertwine with the present, creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.
