In the heart of Varese Ligure, just a few steps from one another, stand the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Oratory of Saints Antonio and Rocco, two buildings that tell a centuries-long story of faith, art, and community life. Their physical proximity reflects a deep bond, shaped by shared devotion and a history that has endured through time without interruption.
The parish community of San Giovanni Battista is documented as early as the 10th century, evidence of a very ancient religious presence. The present church, built in the mid-17th century in elegant Baroque forms, rises on the site of a pre-existing building dating back to the 15th century. The church was consecrated in 1872, sealing a long process of architectural and spiritual transformation that accompanied the development of the town.
Rich in 17th-century works, the church contains eleven altars and features an interior entirely frescoed by Giuseppe Galeotti, one of the foremost painters of Ligurian Baroque. The painted decorations envelop the sacred space in a visual narrative that enhances the theatricality and expressive power typical of the Baroque language, making the church a true treasure chest of art and spirituality.
Beside the church stands the Oratory of Saints Anthony and Roch, also built in the 17th century and conceived in Baroque style. Like the church, the oratory is frescoed internally by Giuseppe Galeotti, creating a coherent artistic dialogue between the two buildings. The oratory is the seat of the Brotherhood of Saints Anthony and Roch, founded in the 15th century and still active today, bearing witness to a devotion that continues to live on in the present.
