The Basilica of San Salvatore dei Fieschi was built in 1244 at the behest of Pope Innocent IV, born Sinibaldo Fieschi, in response to the damage that the territory suffered due to the attacks perpetrated by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, excommunicated during the Council of Lyon.
The Basilica dei Fieschi, located along the famous Via Francigena, is an important stop for pilgrims heading to Rome. The basilica was opened to religious worship after 1276, under the pontificate of Hadrian V, born Ottobuono Fieschi, nephew of Sinibaldo. The basilica is considered one of the most valuable Romanesque buildings preserved in Liguria and is included among the national monuments.
The External Facade: The facade is entirely covered in slate, enriched by alternating bands of white marble and slate, a style typical of Ligurian buildings, both public and religious. The pilasters and hanging arches enrich the layout of the facade. In the center of the facade there is a large rose window crowned by marble arches, in an elegant combination of Gothic-Romanesque style. The Gothic portal is surmounted by an inscription regarding the foundation of the temple, while in the lunette there is a 15th century fresco depicting the Crucifixion.
The Bell Tower: The bell tower looks like a sturdy quadrangular tower with four mullioned windows. The central spire is flanked by four spiers on the sides.
A curiosity: On the façade facing west there is a hidden marble plaque with a curious superstitious wish: “STET-DOMUS-HAEC DONEC-BIBERIT FORMICA-MARINAM” (May this building resist until the ant has drunk all the water from the sea).
Interiors and Preserved Works: Inside, the building is divided into three naves, separated by rows of stone columns decorated with elaborate capitals. Among the works and relics preserved in the basilica, the fragments of the True Cross of Jesus stand out, kept in a crystal case and donated to the temple by Pope Adrian V.
The Pipe Organ: In the right nave, at floor level, there is a valuable pipe organ, made by Dell’Orto & Lanzini, known for its exceptional sound quality and craftsmanship.
The Basilica dei Fieschi is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of the history and culture of Liguria.
