The Church of San Filippo Neri and Saint Teresa of Ávila, built in elegant Baroque style, was consecrated in 1676 and is rooted in a long history of spirituality and community life. In the past, it was part of a convent of Augustinian nuns, founded as a College by Brigida Caranza, a woman from Varese Ligure who played a central role in the creation of this place, where education, devotion, and service were closely intertwined.
Local tradition preserves a fond memory of the cloistered nuns, who are said to have prepared the characteristic Sciuette, almond-paste sweets that have become a symbol of the area. This simple yet precious knowledge, cultivated within the silence of the convent, weaves together spirituality and everyday life, leaving a lasting mark on local culture.
In Varese Ligure there is also the Fondazione Opera Pia Vincenzo Maghella, a charitable institution which, although not directly connected to the religious complex of San Filippo Neri and Saint Teresa of Ávila, shares the same urban setting. Founded in 1851 by Giacomo Vincenzo Maghella for the establishment of a nursery school, the Foundation is located in the same square as the church, bearing witness to an ideal continuity of care for childhood, education, and the common good.
