Basilica of Santo Stefano

Founded on the remains of a fortress dating back to the year 1000, the Basilica of Santo Stefano was elevated to the rank of Plebanian Church in 1143: approximately thirty surrounding churches depended on it.

The Baroque Transformation of 1657

In 1657, St. Stephen’s Basilica underwent a stunning transformation with the addition of elegant Baroque elements. Two impressive bell towers were erected, one facing south and the other east. The latter was not only a bell tower, but also a strategic watchtower. Its privileged position allowed it to spot any attacks by the Turks or other enemies, thus protecting the city.

The Splendid Marble Facade from 1936

Completed in 1936, the marble facade of St. Stephen’s Basilica is a true architectural jewel. This striking façade stands out among the other exterior elements of the building, capturing the attention of visitors. In front of the Basilica, there is a unique churchyard, adorned with polychrome sea pebbles, known as “risseu”, which create a fascinating and colorful mosaic.

An Interior Rich in Art and History

Inside the Basilica, visitors can admire eleven altars beautifully decorated with paintings by various renowned artists. Among these, the works of Domenico Piola, a master of baroque art, stand out. The marble statues add a touch of elegance and majesty to the altars, making the interior of the Basilica a place of great beauty and spirituality.

The Magical Statue of Our Lady of the Rosary

One of the most fascinating elements of the Basilica is the altar of the Rosary chapel. Here there is a wooden statue of the Madonna, which according to tradition was the figurehead of an ancient sailing ship. Shrouded in an aura of charm and mystery, this statue is a symbol of devotion and a reminder of ancient maritime legends, adding a further layer of historical and spiritual depth to the Basilica.
