The town of Santa Giulia Centaura is located in an extraordinary panoramic position, on a hill 254 meters above sea level, right in the center of the Gulf of Tigullio. The nickname “Centaura” could derive from the “Centuria” military formation that garrisoned the Via Aurelia below. However, some inhabitants claim that the name is inspired by the frequent north winds that forcefully sweep the slope.
The church dedicated to Santa Giulia, which gave its name to the entire municipal district, is mentioned in an 11th century document, precisely from 1031, as an already existing chapel. The original building, now used as a sacristy, was therefore built before that date. The current church dates back to 1654 and the dedication to Santa Giulia, patron saint of Corsica (visible on clear days from the church) and Livorno, is confirmed by the oldest documents.
Inside the church there is an important relic of Santa Giulia: a forearm bone, officially donated to the church on 3 October 1724. Among the other preserved works there is a wooden crucifix dating back to the 14th century, probably of Byzantine manufacture. The triptych of “Il Volto Santo” by the painter Giovanni Mazone, dating back to the sixteenth century, is another jewel of the church, although some attribute the work to Teramo Piaggio. In the apse, a panel from 1517 depicts Santa Giulia and other saints, further enriching the artistic heritage of the place.
The churchyard is notable for its decoration made with the artistic technique of rissêu, which creates a surprising visual effect through the alternation of colors. From here, in addition to enjoying a breathtaking view of the entire Gulf of Tigullio, you can admire a monumental centenary holm oak, another symbol of the rich history and beauty of Santa Giulia Centaura.
