At 1,550 meters above sea level, Prato della Cipolla opens as a wide natural basin, today a central hub and crossroads for numerous hiking trails in Parco dell’Aveto. Walking along its paths, one immediately feels the connection between nature, history, and adventure that defines this mountain area.
A Refuge Between History and Comfort
In 2009, the new Prato della Cipolla refuge was inaugurated, replacing the historic Capanna Rossetti and offering modern amenities and mountain hospitality. In the same year, sections of the chairlift from Rocca d’Aveto to Prato della Cipolla and Monte Bue were opened, where the eponymous refuge provides overnight accommodations, making the area accessible even to less experienced hikers.
Ancient Traces of Human Presence
Prato della Cipolla is not only a modern hiking destination: surface finds have shown that the area was frequented since the Mesolithic. The presence of various types of lithic industries testifies that thousands of years ago, humans walked and lived on these highlands, leaving silent yet eloquent traces of their history.
