The oldest record of the parish church of Moneglia dates back to a document from 1033. Other documents indicate that the original church was built in the first half of the 12th century and dedicated to the Exaltation of the Cross, according to the legend of it being found on the seashore. For centuries, this parish has represented a spiritual reference point for the community, a witness to local devotion and history.
On September 16, 1725, during a wedding ceremony, the vault of the central nave collapsed, causing deaths and injuries. This event necessitated a complete reconstruction: the current building therefore dates back to the 18th century and was later reconsecrated in 1894. The interior decorations, created in the first half of the 20th century, now enhance the interior with elegance and solemnity.
Among the noteworthy works is the 16th-century baptismal font, located in the first chapel on the left, restored at the end of the 19th century. On the third right altar stands an Immaculate Conception carved by Anton Maria Maragliano, the most important Ligurian wooden sculptor of the 18th century. Above, in the presbytery, is the Holy Cross that gives the church its name: today it is a cross repainted in 1933 by the painter Giulio Corio, covering a 17th-century work. In the sacristy is preserved a Last Supper attributed to Luca Cambiaso, one of the greatest Ligurian painters of the 16th century, born in 1527 in a house directly opposite the church.
