The original building seems to date back to the 12th century, as evidenced by a document from 1238 which refers to it as “Ecclesia Sancti Bartholomei De Zenestra”, from which the current toponym “Ginestra” derives. Even then, the small place of worship represented a spiritual reference point for the local community, situated at the heart of a territory growing between faith and daily life.
Starting from the first half of the 17th century, the Church of San Bartolomeo was modified, enlarged, and decorated, transforming into a more majestic building capable of accommodating a larger number of worshippers and reflecting the artistic and religious spirit of the time. These changes show the desire to make the building not only functional but also aesthetically significant, a testament to the bond between the community and faith.
In 1837, following the fulfillment of a vow made for liberation from cholera and due to population growth, the church underwent further enlargement. The ceremony for laying the first stone was officiated by Saint Antonio Maria Gianelli, a symbol of popular devotion and community participation.
Since 1715, in addition to the traditional dedication to Saint Bartholomew, the building has also been dedicated to the Madonna del Soccorso. Every October, the community celebrates the patronal feast in her honor, confirming the church’s central role not only as a place of worship but also as the cultural and spiritual heart of life in Ginestra.
