In the heart of Moneglia stands the Oratory of the Disciplinants, dedicated to the Madonna and considered one of the oldest buildings in the town. The exact date of its foundation remains unknown, but the architrave above the entrance door bears the inscription “Saeculo decimo”. In reality, an epigraph on the external wall and the oldest frescoes preserved inside date the history of the oratory back at least to the 13th century, around the year 1200.
Over the centuries, the confraternity members were repeatedly forced to cover the frescoes with lime or plaster and to paint new decorative cycles over the previous ones. Today, this process has left an extraordinary stratification: at least five layers of frescoes, dating from between 1200 and 1700. The oldest, visible on the walls near the altar, show fragments of the Triumph of Death and figures of saints. The following century is represented by images of Saint Christopher and the Virgin, while the 16th-century cycles depict episodes from the life of the Virgin along the south wall and from the Passion of Christ on the north wall, framed by friezes decorated with vases and dolphins.
Despite restoration work carried out between the 1980s and 1990s, the conservation of the oratory remains a constant challenge. Humidity and salt air continue to threaten both the structure and the precious decorative apparatus, making this place a delicate balance between memory and preservation.
Today, the Oratory of the Disciplinants is not only a guardian of history and art, but also a living cultural space.
