Church of Santa Maria Assunta and village of Allegrezze

Allegrezze: Crossroads of History

In the heart of the Val d’Aveto, the village of Allegrezze lies along one of the key junctions that once connected trade routes to the Val Trebbia and Santo Stefano d’Aveto. Its existence is documented as early as 1197 through an oath, highlighting its strategic and social importance. Walking through the village streets, one can feel the enduring connection between commerce, community, and faith that has shaped centuries of local history.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta: The Spiritual Heart

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta is probably the oldest in the valley, with documented existence from 1287 as a possession of the renowned monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro in Pavia. In the mid-16th century, Allegrezze gained notoriety due to the alleged apparition of the Madonna to a local peasant woman, now commemorated by a small chapel located just above the village.

Art and Architecture: Precious Details

Inside the church, the nave is supported by dark slate columns, representing the oldest part of the structure, and enhanced by a fine marble floor. Of particular importance is the fresco near the baptismal font, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century, depicting the Baptism of Christ—a testament to the devotion and sacred art of the Allegrezze community.

Surviving War: Memory and Resistance

The church has also witnessed dramatic events. On August 29, 1944, while Nazi-fascist troops set fire to the village in retaliation after a clash with partisan forces, the building miraculously survived, preserving centuries of history, faith, and art.

Monumental Sequoias: Symbols of Connection and Migration

Outside, near the cemetery, stand two imposing sequoias, recognized as Monumental Trees of the Liguria Region. Planted in the early 20th century by the son of a local family who had emigrated to the United States, these trees reflect a deep connection to the homeland and bear witness to the significant migration from Val d’Aveto to North America starting in the second half of the 19th century.
