Parish Church of San Tommaso and Rectory (Curlo)

Leivi di Curlo: The Religious Heart of Tigullio

In the picturesque hinterland of Tigullio, the village of Curlo preserves the Church of San Tommaso and the adjacent rectory, a historic and religious center of primary importance. Documented after the 12th century, the church represents a significant example of the spread of medieval parish organization in rural Liguria, becoming a spiritual and communal reference point for the local population.

Architecture and Historical Layers

The single-nave church features a longitudinal plan with an elevated presbytery, while the stone walls and plastered surfaces, topped with slate roofing, reflect traditional construction techniques of the Genoese area. Successive restorations and expansions reveal layers of history, illustrating centuries of functional and liturgical care by the community.

Devotion and Relics

In the 14th century, the church temporarily lost prominence when it was united with the community of San Bartolomeo. However, in 1582, the apostolic visit of Monsignor Francesco Bossi led to a liturgical reorganization. In the 17th century, twenty-five relics of Roman martyr saints were placed in the crypt beneath the presbytery, enhancing the spiritual and cultural value of the building and reflecting the intensification of post-Tridentine devotion.

The Rectory and the Unified Function of the Complex

The rectory, structurally connected to the church, served as the parish priest’s residence and the administrative center of the parish. Together with the church, it forms a unified complex for liturgical, pastoral, and residential purposes, following a model typical of small Ligurian villages and reinforcing the communal identity of Curlo.

A Heritage of History and Identity

As a whole, the San Tommaso Church and Rectory complex represents a significant historical and architectural document, a testament to continuity of use, functional adaptations, and the enduring role of the site in the spiritual and social life of the Curlo community.
