Monumental Cemetery of Lavagna

The monumental cemetery of Lavagna is configured as a true open-air museum, characterized by ornamental tombs, valuable statues and chapels that represent true architectural works, making it one of the most evocative places in Liguria.

Founded in 1810 and located on a hilly area, it is considered the second for works of art in the region, after the famous Staglieno cemetery in Genoa.

The initial part, known as the “old cemetery”, follows the profile of the hill and hosts monumental marble tombs of extraordinary beauty, many of which were created by the sculptors of the Repetto laboratory, some of whom are buried in the cemetery itself.

The many statues present depict symbols of faith, pain, political affiliations and professions, typically dating back to the nineteenth century.

In the most recent area of the cemetery, the symbols evolve and reflect cultural change, with Liberty and Art Deco influences: the art here represents movement, the passage from death to future life, with processions of girls and references to the “Divine Comedy”. Among the most important sculptors who contributed to this part of the cemetery are Ersanilli, Brizzolara, Zucchi, Sanguineti and Dallorso.
