Church of the Immaculate Conception

The church of Cavi di Lavagna has very ancient roots. In Liguria, already in 1031, a document mentions several localities of Lavagna, including “Clapària”, today known as Cavi, where there was a small devotional chapel in honor of San Erasmo.

In this location, there was a small devotional chapel dedicated to San Erasmo, testimony to a long tradition of faith.

The Chapel of Santa Chiara, Erasmo and Lorenzo

In 1735, the rector of Centaura (now Santa Giulia) informed the Archbishop of Genoa of the existence of the Chapel of Santa Chiara, Erasmo and Lorenzo in Cavi. This structure, of modest dimensions, was only 23 palms long and served as a place of worship for the local community.

The Need for a Larger Church

Tired of the climb that tied them to the church of Santa Giulia, located in what is now Via del Paradiso, the inhabitants of Cavi wanted a larger and more accessible church. The need for a more comfortable and spacious place of worship became increasingly pressing for the community.

The Construction of the New Church

In 1752, the Senate of Genoa granted authorization for the construction of a new church. The works, which began immediately afterwards, were concluded in 1757. The new church was subsequently elevated to the rank of parish in 1797, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception with Saint Erasmus and Saint Anthony of Padua as co-owners.

An Elegant Interior and a Panoramic View

The church has a single nave, enriched by two side altars dedicated to San Giuseppe and Sant’Anna. These altars are decorated with fine marble, giving the interior of the church a refined elegance. Located in a privileged position, overlooking the sea, the church offers a spectacular panorama from its square in front, becoming a place of contemplation and spirituality immersed in the beauty of Ligurian nature.
