The Nostra Signora del Ponte Sanctuary, located near the Maddalena Bridge, is a symbol of devotion and protection that has its roots in the 13th century. Built at the behest of the Fieschi family, the sanctuary is closely linked to the history of the ancient Fieschi bridge, today known as the Maddalena Bridge. This sacred place, dedicated to the Madonna, has been a spiritual refuge for travelers and pilgrims for centuries.
The original chapel was built in the 13th century, when the Fieschi family decided to place an image of the Madonna with the task of protecting travelers crossing the bridge. In 1492, the chapel was rebuilt and expanded, adapting to the needs of a growing and increasingly devout community.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the sanctuary was further enriched thanks to the work of Lorenzo Fasolo from Pavia. The artist decorated the chapel with a fresco depicting the Madonna della Misericordia. This fresco represents the Madonna who, with her large cloak, protects men, women and brothers from the plague. The plague, seen as divine punishment, was a major fear of the time, and the image of the Madonna offered comfort and hope to the community.
Located on the main altar, the painting of the Madonna del Ponte is a valuable panel that has aroused great interest among art historians. Identified as a work by the young Sienese artist Piero Lorenzetti, this painting was probably brought to Liguria by Cardinal Luca Fieschi. Lorenzetti, known for his mastery of capturing the spiritual essence in his works, gave the sanctuary an inestimable artistic value.
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Bridge continues to be a beacon of faith and protection for the local community. Through the centuries, the sanctuary has maintained its historical and spiritual importance, offering a place of reflection and prayer. Today, visitors and devotees can admire the works of art that adorn the sanctuary and immerse themselves in the rich history that this sacred place holds.
In this way, the Nostra Signora del Ponte Sanctuary is not only a monument of faith, but also a witness to the history and culture of Liguria, uniting past and present in a continuous celebration of devotion and divine protection.
