Oratory of S. Giovanni Battista in Cogorno
The oratory, home to a Confraternity of Disciplinarians since ancient times, shines with the aura of its long history that extends through the centuries. Probably built in the second half of the 15th century, this monument of devotion and spirituality was rebuilt in the first half of the 1700s, replacing a previous sacred structure located nearby. Today, it stands as an authentic jewel of Baroque art, testimony to the artistic and spiritual fervor of the era.
The Magnificent Interior
The interior of the church, with its single nave, is a riot of beauty and magnificence. Frescoes, gilded stuccoes and precious marbles decorate the walls, capturing the gaze of the faithful and visitors. Behind the main altar, a magnificent polyptych dating back to 1492, the work of the famous “Master of S. Lorenzo”, represents a masterpiece of sacred art. The figures of St. Lawrence and other saints emanate a divine light that pervades the sacred space.
Treasures of Devotion
The first altar on the right houses a precious fifteenth-century marble frontal, originally from a monastery in Val Polcevera, which in the past housed the remains of Blessed Nicholas of Prussia. This adds a touch of sacredness and veneration to this place of faith and devotion.
