Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Sorlana, with its origins dating back to ancient times, is witness to a history rich in devotion and ecclesiastical changes over the centuries. Already in 1031, the Archbishop of Genoa collected the “rents” of the lands of Solrana, as documented in the Archbishop’s Register. This ancient document mentions the localities of Solrana including Sorlana, confirming the antiquity of the presence of the church.

Ancient Roots and Historical Evolution

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Sorlana is also mentioned in the Lodo of 1387, which established the tax quotas, highlighting its importance in the ecclesiastical context of the time. Since 1311, it has been listed among the curated churches of the Archdiocese of Genoa, with the number 133. Over the centuries, the church has experienced significant changes: in 1518, together with its parish church and others, it passed to the Diocese of Brugnato. However, on 7 October 1594, it returned to the Archdiocese of Genoa, following an exchange between Archbishop Alessandro Centurione and Bishop Stefano Baliano, who ceded the church of San Apollinare di Reppia.

Architecture and Artistic Treasures

The church stands out for its graceful architectural lines, with a bell tower decorated with pilasters and capitals that add a touch of elegance to its profile. Inside, it houses a canvas and a vintage crucifix, precious testimonies of its long history of faith and devotion. An 18th century tabernacle further enriches its artistic and spiritual heritage.

A Monument of Spirituality and Culture

Thus, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Sorlana continues to be not only a place of worship, but also a monument of spirituality and culture. Through the centuries, it has jealously guarded its roots and offered spiritual refuge to generations of faithful, testifying to the continuity of faith and tradition in the region.
