Parish church of S. Maria Monticelli in Cogorno

According to some local historians, its foundations rest on the ruins of an ancient church administered by Benedictine monks. This tradition is still evidenced today by a small marble stoup, engraved with the coat of arms of the olive trees, the emblem of the monks who once guarded it with devotion.

The Origins and Architecture of the Church

What is certain is that the current building stands on the foundations of its predecessor, rebuilt in 1374 and subsequently enlarged in 1730. The imposing and majestic façade of the church is flanked on the left by a bell tower. This tower houses six bells and a clock that marks the time, topped by a small dome with an octagonal base that stands out against the sky, creating a fascinating and solemn panorama.

An Interior of Intimacy and Devotion

Crossing the threshold of the church, you enter the intimacy of a single nave interior, enriched by four altars sunken into the walls, each of which holds a secret of faith and devotion. Behind the High Altar, a small niche houses a painted wooden sculpture of the Madonna, surrounded by eight angelic little angels, exuding an aura of grace and sacredness. This representation of the Madonna is a symbol of protection and love for the community.

The Altar of the Nativity of Mary

On the second altar on the left, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, a wooden group depicts the Holy Family: Maria Bambina, S. Gioacchino and S. Anna. This work is attributed to the school of Maestro Maragliano, famous for his ability to convey a sense of intimacy and sanctity. The representation of the Nativity of Mary is a call to purity and devotion, evoking feelings of peace and reflection in the faithful.
