Porta Ponente

Immersed in the texture of the alleys of Lavagna, the “Porta di Rezza” is an ancient passage that led, beyond the walls, towards the picturesque town of Madonna del Ponte. Of all the gates that once protected the city, this is the only one that has survived the passage of centuries.

Looking beyond its imposing silhouette, you can see a small square that once responded to the name of “herb square”. Here, in the quiet of the past, farmers gathered to sell their vegetable crops and freshly milked milk. But during epidemics, when danger loomed over the streets, the square was transformed into a place of surveillance, manned by guards who carefully monitored the passage of travellers.

This gate is not only a symbol of defense and protection, but also of daily life and commercial exchanges that animated the city. Crossing it meant entering a world of colors and smells, of voices and merchandise, of which today only the silent walls can remind us.

And so, the “Rezza door” continues to silently watch over the entrance to Lavagna, guardian of ancient secrets and witness to the glorious past of this fascinating city.
